Exam structure — quick reference
IELTS Academic: Listening 30 minutes (40 questions, 4 sections, recordings played once only — no rewind), Reading 60 minutes (40 questions, 3 academic passages), Writing 60 minutes (Task 1 = 150-word data description, Task 2 = 250-word essay), Speaking 11 to 14 minutes (face-to-face with an examiner, 3 parts).
General Training has the same Listening and Speaking modules. Reading is workplace and lifestyle texts; Writing Task 1 is a letter (formal, semi-formal or informal). Most VV Nagar students take Academic; the few targeting Canada PR after a year abroad take General.
Bands are 1 to 9 in 0.5 steps. Overall band is the average of the four module scores rounded to the nearest 0.5. So 7+7+6.5+7 = 6.875 rounds to 7.0; 6.5+6.5+6+6.5 = 6.375 rounds to 6.5.
Where VV Nagar students typically need work
Listening Section 4 (academic lecture, no breaks, gap-fill answers) is where most engineering students leak. Their accent recognition is fine but the academic vocabulary in lecture excerpts is unfamiliar. We drill 8 Section 4s per week from week three onwards.
Reading: not vocabulary, but timing. 60 minutes for 40 questions across 3 passages means about 17 minutes per passage with 3 minutes for transferring answers. Most students lose 1 to 1.5 bands by spending too long on the first passage.
Writing Task 2: the band-7 ceiling for English-medium students is usually structural, not linguistic. Conclusions that just rephrase the introduction, body paragraphs without a clear topic sentence, and over-reliance on 'firstly, secondly, finally'. We rebuild paragraph architecture in week 3 to 5.
Target bands for the destinations VV Nagar students choose
Canada — community colleges 6.0 minimum no band below 5.5; universities 6.5 with no band below 6.0. UK — most Master's 6.5 with 6.0 each; Russell Group sometimes 7.0. Australia — 6.5 standard, Group of Eight 7.0 in some Engineering Master's programs.
Germany English-taught Master's: 6.5 to 7.0 typically; some technical universities accept 6.0. Ireland: 6.5 standard. New Zealand: 6.5 to 7.0 depending on program.
Canada Express Entry CLB 9 (max-points language tier for most candidates): IELTS GT Listening 8.0, Reading 7.0, Writing 7.0, Speaking 7.0. CLB 10: 8.5 / 8.0 / 7.5 / 7.5.
Sample 6-week intensive timeline
Week 1: Diagnostic mock, band-descriptor walkthrough, Listening Section 1-2 drills, Reading skim/scan strategy. Week 2: Writing Task 1 (line, bar, pie, table charts), Listening 3-4, Speaking Part 1.
Week 3: Writing Task 1 (process diagrams, maps), Reading matching headings and Yes/No/Not Given, Speaking Part 2 cue cards. Week 4: Mid-mock, Writing Task 2 opinion essays, Speaking Part 3 depth questions.
Week 5: Writing Task 2 problem-solution and discussion essays, Listening high-band drills, Reading sentence completion. Week 6: Two full mocks, exam-day strategy, slot booking at IDP or British Council.
What the fee covers
Live classes (4 to 6 days/week), our internal IELTS workbook, two Cambridge IELTS books (15 and 17 by default), online mock-test portal, two graded mocks per week, individual Writing feedback, free Speaking-only revision week if you want one before the exam.
Not included: the IELTS exam fee (around 17,000 INR paid directly to IDP or British Council), and any extra one-on-one sessions you choose to book.
